Daniel W. Caprio, Jr. has been named as Managing Director with the Government Affairs practice.

 

 

 

Dan Caprio brings nearly 25 years of practical policy experience to technology issues involving the convergence of internet, telecommunications and technology policy. Such issues include:

  • Privacy;
  • Cyber security;
  • Information security;
  • Supply chain management and visibility; and Radio frequency identification (RFID).

From 2004-2006 Caprio served as Chief Privacy Officer for the Department of Commerce and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy where he advised the Secretary of Commerce and the White House on technology policy issues and privacy protection in the digital age. He testified before the European Commission on RFID in 2006 and 2007. In 2007 he was appointed to serve on the Department of Homeland Security Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee. In 2009, Caprio was named by the European Commission to represent industry as a stakeholder and expert in the implementation of the European Commission RFID recommendations.

While at the Department of Commerce, Caprio oversaw all departmental activities related to the development and implementation of federal privacy laws, policies, and practices. He served as Chairman of the Department of Commerce RFID working group and Co-Chairman of the Federal RFID interagency working group. He has been a frequent speaker on RFID at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

Prior to his tenure at the Department of Commerce, Caprio served as Chief of Staff to a Commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). In 2002 he was selected to represent the United States on the experts group revising the OECD guidelines on information systems and networks.
